What had more Impact, the Printing Press or the Internet?

The printing press was a marvel of technology that allowed people to distribute news and knowledge to many people locally. The internet however did the same thing, except for the part where everyone can see the information in a matter of minutes, it was not limited to its surrounding area, it revolutionized life as we know it, or how it has helped changed technology and life forever. What I’m trying to say is as more years pass things are not made the same way like they used to be  a couple of years ago, back in the day. Stuff is made more easily and efficiently thanks to new technology and even the new advanced industry makes stuff a lot faster than old fashioned handmade products. The printing press and the Internet were big deals when they both came out in their time in the form of spreading information and knowledge to the people that they could deliver to.  They are both powerful inventions that impacted history greatly, but in my opinion the internet is far superior.

“The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unprecedented integration of capabilities. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location.(Barry M. Leiner)”, I think that this is a perfect explanation of why the internet is superior, no longer do we have to do every single thing by hand, or worry if we make a mistake and have to start over from square one, or being able to get something out into the world and not being limited by where we live or come from. The Internet is only a few years old, but can be stated that it has help spread a lot of information. The Internet is the center of moving info to one place to somewhere else in the blink of an eye. It went from being an office tool to somethis that you use in everyday life to important things or just for even entertainment. It created an outburst in only a short period by changing the way we work, shop, bank and live. The Internet has become a ritual and a major component in our everyday lives. The Internet is a key essential in our lives and has made a great impact in only a short amount of time. And on a personal note I’m glad I don’t live in a time where I would have to walk into a store to get pornography and feel awkward about buying it, so that’s a plus.

The Internet is essentially the begging of the digital age .The internet was invented for very same reason that the printing press was invented, to spread information faster and it opened new jobs skills on a world wide scale. Humanity always wants to progress forward and we always look for something new and the Internet was that technology that harbored growth and boy did it grow. When the Internet came it was very limited to text, constantly inputting codes to get through to the program or game you wanted. A good example of this was DOS that hosted games in the early days of home computer gaming where you had to constantly had to type codes to run the game and even then it had a sixty-forty chance of crashing or not running at all, “DOS sucked so much back in the day.”(JonTron). Now media like videos, images, and music could be used in the web and also the advancement of social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (which is my favorite one of them).

Technological advance like these could not be thought of in the printing press brecause the technology was so very limited in that time period. One consistant problem with the Internet is there’s no control coming out from the web. Anyone could post, share video, or do anything that could lead to change of views or events within seconds or even offending and abusing someone also known as cyber-bullying. The printing presses had that control of the information content. Publishing companies determined what can or cannot be printed depending if it will be reliable and factual information. The Internet does not have content control. It was only recent some events that happen raised issue should the Internet be restricted like SOPA.

To wrap this up, I believe that Internet has greater impact than printing press because the internet has more reach in terms of faster information spreading, multiple tools for various activities, translation tool has helped me many times when I have wanted to learn more about a culture, and even reading books is easier now. There are definitely a lot of people out there who don’t know how to use the internet, and I’m glad I’m not one of those people because I probably wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now because of it.
