The Printing Press and the Internet

The world’s first movable type printing press was invented and developed in China by Bisheng between the years 1041 and 1048. Through technological changes, movable type mechanical printing technology was improved by Korea and Germany. As time went on, in Renaissance Europe, the arrival of mechanical movable type printing introduced the era of mass communication which permanently altered the structure of society.

With the arrival of the printing press, communication is easier for most people. With the acceleration of higher education, more people benefits from the printing press, this used to only be used by the upper class. The printing technology also enables political ideas and religions to spread to more people and countries. The printing press combines pictures and text, and produces the books in bulk. It promotes the communication of culture across the world. But, the process of printing takes a lot of time requires compatible mediums, and its coverage is limited.

For the Internet, the origins of the Internet reach back to research commissioned by the United States government in the 1960s to build robust, fault-tolerant communication via computer networks. Over the third of the world’s human population – have used the services of the Internet, approximately 100 times more people than were using 1995.

For global development, the influence of the Internet is much more important than the printing press. The Internet shortens the distance between people in many aspects. Its simple and convenient usage makes it easy for almost every person to use it. Text, pictures and videos can be viewed, and people can access updated news and books. And people do not need to wait for the hardcopy to be published the update from the website editor on the Internet is more frequent and much faster. On the other hand, it can boost the development of economic deals through faster information exchange. The Internet also provides a very good transaction platform for commodities trading, like Amazon, eBay, etc. Since the development of the Internet is getting faster and faster, nowadays, the Internet not only can be used on computers, but also on mobile devices, like smart phone and tablet. People are paying more attention on their smart phones, and doing more shopping and Internet transactions via smart phones. With the development of 3G and 4G networks, more and more functions have been added to smart phones; they can do even more things than computers do. In the mean time, the development of mobile devices also boosts the usage coverage of Internet, which makes the Internet more able to penetrate the lives of people all over the world.

Nowadays, the Internet is almost involved in every aspect of human life. If there was no the Internet, life would become very boring, the communication between countries would decrease, and cultures would be isolated. People could not spend more time and energy on other things. Because they would be spending more time communicating with each other or exchanging information. If there was only the printing press, the development of society would take much longer time, and waste would increase. The Internet helps to protect the environment, because it saves a lot of consumption of paper and human resources.

Although, the Internet is convenient, it still has some limitations. For instance, you can not make sure the stuff’s size and you also cannot view 360 degrees of the product from different angles. After all, the internet is the virtual platform. In the wake of developments in science and technology, the 3D printer showed up, and maybe it will be widespread. And of course it will weaken the limitation. After all, those technologies are created for the urge of the people’s normal life. No wander there would be more and more unpredictable technologies appear and been popularize for the purpose of convenience.

  1. Leeann,

Good writing and good structure. However some facts seem to be skipped over.

Yes you can judge size and see the product in 360 if photographed correctly. Lots to discuss.
i do however appreciate the reference to BiSheng – many need to know this. We need to expand our global thought and the Internet does this in an instance everyday.
